About Me

My photo
Hello, let me introduce myself a bit...I am a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a retired labor and delivery room nurse of 38 years. Since retiring, my days have become mostly calm and unstructured. My Fluid Days blog is part of that life, though not updated at this time. My Hadrian's Wall Blog is the journal of our 100 mile walk across England in 2009 and again in 2010. My Dales Way Journal is about another long-distance hike we did in September of 2014. Russ, my husband and best friend for 46 years is my walking companion. He keeps me laughing and makes every day a joy.

Sept.11, 12 Arrival in London

Well, here we are in the hustle and bustle of London. We flew all night with an uneventful trip, but dozed only a couple of times. After collecting my suitcase at Heathrow, (it arrived!) we took the underground tube to Paddington Station and purchased train tickets for Saturday to Ilkley, West Yorkshire. That is the little town where our walk will begin. But first we will spend a couple of days here to adjust to the seven-hour time difference.

Inside Paddington Station

Our hotel the Chrysos was a short five-minute walk from the train station on Norfolk Square.

We have stayed in half the hotels around this square (and there are at least a dozen) over the last twenty years. They are mostly budget and look shabbier every time we return. The square used to be a lovely green park, but it too has deteriorated. This picture was taken from our room. London hotel prices are enough to make you choke! Anything less than 100 £/night is a scary place you don't want to be in...

After we deposited our luggage in our room, we returned to Paddington and took the tube to Trafalgar Square.

Nelson's Column at Trafalgar

This picture is looking across the square to St. Martin's-in-the-Field, a beautiful old church that has a lovely Eventide program every evening open to the public. I took a picture from this identical spot, including the lamppost, but mine didn't turn out as well as this one. I think it's a painting.

Trafalgar Square is also the location of our favorite place of all--The National Gallery, one of the world's premier art museums.

It was not as quiet as this picture might suggest . . . it is always busy with tourists, but the paintings are beyond description. I borrowed this picture from their web site. It looks just like this--sans people.

The long trip and little sleep soon caught up with us, so we returned to our hotel and crashed... with the help of a little Excedrin PM.
